October Article - Money & WOrk

Has Making Money Got Anything to Do With Work?

The other day I went to a garage sale, where people display and sell items in their garage or on the driveway. I spotted a green box with shiny silver tiles in it; 100 of them. The collection celebrated 100 years of the car in Australian and came with a book. Each silver tile featured an impression of a particular car and everything was in good condition. I picked up the book and began reading the first page. I read two phrases, put the book down, inquired about the price, made an offer and bought it.

The phrases that got my attention were, “Certificate of Authenticity” and “sterling silver.”

When I got home, I made some inquiries - the collection contains 100 sterling silver ingots with a combined weight of 5oz. That put the value, in terms of silver content, at around $150-200. I researched some more  to find that these particular collections were made circa 1976 and had sold on EBay recently for $500. My purchase price was just $12.

So, hooray for me and what’s the point of the story?
