Can Ten Percent Change Your Financial Reality?
Written by Stephen Outram
How do you begin to have money when, your whole life, you have been taught to spend it?
The money that we use today is designed to be spent and that's what most people do with it; they spend it. We are taught to spend money at a young age when our parents give us something called "pocket" or "spending money." Despite its name, pocket money rarely stays in our pockets but is quickly spent and transferred from our pocket to another person's pocket. This early entraining to spend money is unwittingly used to create a new generation of consumers.
Rarely, are children taught to have-money. Wealthy people have money while poor people spend all of the money they have. Having money requires you to not-spend some of the money that comes into your life. Certainly, you need to spend some money to acquire things that you require, for example, to pay your rent, buy food or go to the movies.
Difficulty can be created by the guidance that parents give. I asked a young girl where money came from; she was very clear, "Mum gets her spending money from the ATM [automatic teller machine]." So, how do you change a point-of-view that you were implanted with, as a young child, so that you can begin to have money?
Wealthy people have money while poor people spend all of the money they have.
Gary Douglas, the founder of Access Consciousness, introduced me to the 10% tool. It's very simple, take 10% of all of the money that comes into your life and keep it. Take this action before you pay your bills or begin spending. Do not spend your 10%; your 10% is not spending money.
Your 10% is the beginning of you having-money. When I first began using this tool I didn't like it. It seemed, somehow, that the money was being stolen from me. In fact, 10% was being taken out of my spending-money and I resented that. At some point, when my 10% had grown into something I considered valuable, that resentment disappeared completely. Today, I enjoy putting 30 - 50% into my having-money.
I realise that the 10% is an honouring of me. It is me, acknowledging me for my capacity to create and have money, and to be wealthy. Gary said that when my 10% grew to a certain amount, I would never think or worry about money again. He said that amount, would be different for different people. He is correct.
Like all new tools, that are designed to change a point-of-view and create a different possibility, you will initially resist it, as I did. But stick with it and you will create the change, a beginning that will allow you to have-money with total ease. Having money is key to being wealthy.
The 10% tool works, your choice is to use it or not.
