Has Making Money Got Anything to Do With Work?
Written by Stephen Outram
Rather than working to get some money, author Stephen Outram writes on the ease, joy and large profits available with making-money.

The other day I went to a garage sale, where people display and sell items in their garage or on the driveway. I spotted a green box with shiny silver tiles in it; 100 of them. The collection celebrated 100 years of the car in Australian and came with a book. Each silver tile featured an impression of a particular car and everything was in good condition. I picked up the book and began reading the first page. I read two phrases, put the book down, inquired about the price, made an offer and bought it.
The phrases that got my attention were, “Certificate of Authenticity” and “sterling silver.”
When I got home, I made some inquiries - the collection contains 100 sterling silver ingots with a combined weight of 5oz. That put the value, in terms of silver content, at around $150-200. I researched some more to find that these particular collections were made circa 1976 and had sold on EBay recently for $500. My purchase price was just $12.So, hooray for me and what’s the point of the story?
When you’re willing to be aware, you can make-money with total ease and without work.
Is making-money different to work and have we confused the two?
Work has an interesting history. It was used c1650 in Workhouse "place where the-poor or petty criminals are lodged.” The “working class” showed up c1789 and work can mean “something done, a deed or action.” Today, it is this idea that you exchange your effort, talent and ability for currency i.e. you work to earn a living.
Making-money doesn’t require that you work; though working can get you money. "Make" is much more connected with a creative or generative capacity that allows something to show up; to begin. For example,
- to make a book "arrange a series of bets" 1828
- to make do "manage with what is available"
- on the make "intent on profit or advancement"
- make out "get along" c.1600
- make up "end a quarrel, reconcile" 1660s
Making-money then, is to create and institute that which allows money to show up. This could involve work, but doesn’t have to. In my story above, there was no work or effort. In fact, it was fun, joyful and easy... and very profitable.
Have we embraced and become “working class” as the only way we can get money; by working hard for those paper or plastic notes and more-often-now, digital dots on a computer screen. Do the wealthy employ working class people to make-money, without working themselves?
What generative capacities are you unaware of, that if you became aware of them would allow you to make-money with ease, rather than working hard for the money you get?
