Biography: Stephen Outram
When I recall my life, so far, I realise that it has been really quite amazing; varied, adventurous ... and always marinated with a juicy curiosity and an intense inquisitive seeking. I mean, hey! "What else is truly possible?"
My parents were pioneers and such a gift in my life. In 1965, they left family and friends in the United Kingdom and emigrated 12,000 miles across the sea to Australia. It's difficult to imagine the bravery that choice required, to step-out into the unknown and create a different life. Not to mention the judgment they received from the established relatives ... Molly and Trevor taking the two key family-name-bearers off to some remote convict-colony on the other side of the world was not happy news.
My years 8-12 were spent in a tiny, remote town called Port Hedland in Western Australia. When we arrived, there was no radio, no television and no fresh milk. What Port Hedland did have in abundance was sticky black flies and what was to drive the dynamic boom it enjoyed, iron ore. The families’ journey and experience of creating a new life in Australia is the subject of a new book I am co-authoring with my Dad, Trevor.
In 1970, the Outram family was on the move again and drove the full width of Australia, from west to east, to settle on Queensland's Gold Coast where I completed schooling and university. Work began with in Southport with an upcoming architectural firm, 'Burling Brown & Partners.' Australians suffered a recession around 1975, which initiated a friend and I driving 1500 miles to a large mining town in Queensland. Mount Isa is located 1000 miles north of Brisbane and 500 miles inland from Townsville.
My first job was working in the bush, with a geological team, exploring and prospecting copper resources. It was generally 10-days in the bush and 4-days working in the town. We slept in tents and cooked over an open camp fire. After a year, having met some yummy girls, I applied for a job in the town working for Mt Isa Mines Limited, beginning as a labourer and moving onto to various positions including crusher control, explosives, locomotive driver, heavy equipment and other mine machinery operator.
After about 4-years I returned to the Gold Coast and began my own building design business, eventually teaming up with partner Trevor Jones where we established ‘Gold Coast Planning.’ In the late eighties, with itchy feet again, I went overseas for 9-years; living and working in England, Wales and Scotland with some time in France and Germany, including a year back at University getting a Masters Degree in Computer Sciences.
Returning to Australia in 1997, and having embraced computers, I set about a series of career changes including computer generated imagery (CGI) and animation, multimedia; graphic art, website design and production ... and then I discovered Gary Douglas and something called Access Consciousness.
... it was as if I consumed my life as fast as I created it.
Gary facilitates people, with various tools and techniques, in changing the life they have created into something different. It may read above like my life has been one joyful adventurous journey but I’ve had many difficulties. I drank large amounts of alcohol and played hard to compensate for an intense shyness, had no consideration for my body, relationships were always dramatic and ended painfully and I had little or no money; it was as if I consumed my life as fast as I created it.
All of that has changed and with a level of ease that is hard to imagine. Gary did not judge or make any part of me or my life bad or wrong; there was no part I had to disown or get rid of. I was facilitated in simply adding more, beginning with a question, “What else can I add to my life?” He explained that we try to delete in order to change and in so doing continue to create a small life rather that one of abundance.
I now have more money that I’ve ever had.
I attended the course and became a Certified Access Facilitator in 2003. I use the tools and techniques of Access in my own life and also to facilitate change and possibility for others.
The first book I wrote was on a subject that I had struggled with since my early teens, public speaking. The book includes Access tools and presents a unique look at this insidious topic. I now run classes in public speaking and have spoken and presented across the world. A second book on golf followed and a third of some 40 poems.
‘Making Money with Change’ was created as I realised that we all have capacities way beyond what we allow ourselves. Having spent all the money I ever made, I now have more money that I’ve ever had. It’s brilliant! I know what’s required to have that change and would like other people to have that freedom too.
‘Making Money with Change’ is a class that I offer, which changes regularly in the topics covered, for example, gold, silver, antiques, stock market, currency and most important ... You! In addition, I run workshops on public speaking and am available for private sessions and speaking engagements.
I hope the above, provides a suitable resume of what I’ve been up to for the last 50+ years. It was fun to write it up and perhaps it will contribute to creating a space where we can connect.
And remember to ask this question, ‘What else is possible?’ and begin adding new possibilities to your life.
Warm regards,
Stephen Outram
